About Headcorn

Headcorn is a village and civil parish in the borough of Maidstone in Kent, England. The parish is located on the floodplain of the River Beult south east of Maidstone.

The village is eight miles (13 km) from the county town of Maidstone, on the A274 road to Tenterden. In addition to the parish church, dedicated to saints Peter and Paul, there are also churches and chapels for the Methodist, Baptist and Roman Catholic congregations.

There is a small airfield located nearby, where there is an aviation museum and a parachuting centre. Headcorn Parachute Club is the only skydiving club in Kent and is home to national champions and world-record holders.

Headcorn railway station is on the South Eastern Main Line between London and Dover. It was opened on 31 August 1842. On 1 December the same year, the South Eastern Railway opened the second section of its main line onward to Ashford. By 1844, trains were running from London to Dover. The line here is the longest straight stretch of line in the United Kingdom.

A Neolithic polished flint axe was found in the stream near the present school in Headcorn, and a bronze palstave axehead dating from the Bronze Age from New House Farm reveal the presence of people in the area from early times.

However, just to the north of the village a total of four much earlier Paleolithic flint handaxes have been found. Three were found west of the Ulcombe Road and one from north-west of Tong. These have originated from the river gravel terrace that partially survives beneath Tong Bank. This is evidence for a former ancient river system that predates the last glacial episode which ended around 15,000 years ago. The handaxes date from perhaps 250,000 BP.

Suggestions of amazing places to enjoy your Headcorn Escort

Wilderness Bed & Breakfast – from £97

Set across a former 15th-century farmhouse and its outbuildings, this upscale B&B on a country road is 6 miles from Sissinghurst Castle Garden and 11 miles from Mote Park.

The 3 rustic-chic rooms offer free Wi-Fi and flat-screen TVs. Some have orchard views. Distinct touches range from vaulted oak ceilings and Edwardian armchairs, to restored 16th-century floorboards and cosy dressing areas.

Cooked or continental breakfast is served in the airy breakfast room with garden views. Parking is complimentary.

Tudor Park Marriott Hotel & Country Club – from £79

Off the A20 road, this upscale hotel is 1 mile from Bearsted train station, 2.7 miles from Leeds Castle and 8 miles from Kent Downs.

The contemporary rooms feature satellite TV, Wi-Fi (fee) and desks, as well as minibars, and tea and coffeemaking facilities. Upgraded rooms add free bottled water; some offer private terraces. Suites come with separate living areas.

Parking is complimentary. Amenities include an informal restaurant serving classic grill-style dishes, as well as 2 bars, including a lounge serving afternoon tea. There’s also an indoor pool, a spa and a sauna, plus an 18-hole golf course, a gym and a business centre.

Oakwood House – from £62

Dating from 1869, this Victorian mansion house hotel is a 16-minute walk from Maidstone West train station and a 20-minute walk from Fremlin Walk riverside shopping centre.

The standard rooms have simple, modern furnishings and decor, plus flat-screen TVs, free WiFi, and tea and coffeemaking facilities. Upgraded rooms are more contemporary in style, while the suite adds a 4-poster bed, separate sitting and dressing rooms, and a crystal chandelier, plus a whirlpool bath.

Complimentary full English or continental breakfast is served in the conservatory restaurant. There’s also a patio and landscaped lawns, plus several meeting rooms.

The West House

Squirrelled away in a row of Flemish weavers’ cottages, The West Houseisn’t short on genuine Kentish character. The dining room may play up ‘Ye Olde English’ look with its weathered beams, open fire and bare floorboards, but smart, sympathetic restyling has added some easy-on-the-eye modern touches.

It’s an unstuffy platform for chef/patron Graham Garrett’s confident, fine-tuned cooking, which is also reckoned to be “fantastically priced” for a Michelin-starred restaurant. His highly accomplished repertoire is driven by imaginative sourcing, and the result is “incredible food with bags of creativity but no pretentiousness”: consider eclectic ideas such as warm oak-smoked haddock with quail’s egg and bacon dressing, BBQ leg of lamb with spiced sausage, artichoke and white bean barigoule or chorizo-stuffed rabbit leg partnered by white asparagus, Welsh rarebit and hazelnut crumb.

For afters, we’re intrigued by the malted milk jelly with ‘nuggets’, yoghurt powder and smoked milk ice cream. Service is praised to the skies, and the line-up of top-notch ‘natural’ wines by the glass or carafe is also greatly appreciated. “We always come out very happy”, notes a regular.

The Three Chimneys

This civilised, half-timbered pub pretty much gets the balance right between eating and drinking; it’s everything a village local should be, and more. Dating from the early 15th century, its higgledy-piggledy rooms are classic old-style country hostelry – all low ceilings, oak beams, panelling and exposed brick, crackling fires and well-worn furnishings.
The public bar is reserved purely for drinkers, and real ale fans will not be disappointed with the assortment of tip-top brews drawn straight from casks behind the bar; heady Biddenden cider comes straight from the barrel, too, and there’s a decent selection of malt whiskies. The kitchen relies on mostly local suppliers for food that can range from Frogshole Farm asparagus via ploughman’s to Sunday roasts. On warm summer evenings, the sheltered patio and garden are much in demand.

The Mulberry Tree

A contemporary building with the character of an established restaurant, the Mulberry Tree might seem rather contrary, but owner Karen Williams knows exactly what she’s doing. With help from the kitchen team, she delivers a cleverly pitched experience that’s firmly rooted but sufficiently outward-looking to sustain interest.

Drinks in the courtyard might be followed by chicken liver parfait sweetened with Biddenden honey and caramelised apple purée, or crisp whitebait with garlicky mayo for dunking. Main courses with quietly offbeat details – Broadstairs brill with crispy chicken wings or pork belly with cauliflower cheese, croquettes and pickle jus – satisfy a smart crowd who are willing to travel in search of somewhere that really cares. Glamorous decor makes it feel like a night out, while the cat purring at the window makes it feel like a night in.
